Sloppy Joes are always a family favorite, but buying the canned sauce just isn’t all that healthy. Try this recipe and you’ll find they’re much tastier and better for you. The slow cooker means you can just toss it all in earlier in the day and it’ll be ready when everyone is ready to sit down and eat.

Ingredients

3 pounds ground beef or turkey (or a mixture)
2 medium yellow onions, chopped
2 green peppers, seeded and chopped
1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped
5-6 pieces of celery, chopped
8 cloves of garlic, minced
1 14.5-ounce can fire roasted tomatoes
1 cup chili sauce
½ cup ketchup
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp mustard
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp cumin
½ tsp paprika
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
Buns or rolls

Directions

  1. Brown the meat a skillet. Drain the grease and pour the meat into the slow cooker.
  2. Put the onion, peppers, and garlic in the skillet and sauté until the onions start to become translucent.
  3. Add all of the ingredients (besides the rolls) to the slow cooker and mix well.
  4. Cover and cook on low for about 5-6 hours.
